How to replace the head gaskets
Here are Murray's thoughts on replacing the head gaskets:
Using RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) to seal the head gaskets will lead to coolant leaks and oil seepage
Try this, it's how I do them
Clean the block and heads with gel paint stripper and a small brush
When all old gasket materials are removed and clean, spray air into all bolt holes to make sure they are free from fluids and debris
Clean all surfaces with brake cleaner
Apply Permatex Copper Plus, head gasket spray to both sides of the new head gasket. A wet coat is good
Install the gasket, O ring, and head
Dip the head of the bolt only in oil and install bolts and torque to spec (36 - 43 ft lbs)
Finish assembly
Run engine to temp and shut off
Let the motor fully cool, overnight.
Loosen each head bolt in sequence 1/2 turn and re-torque to spec
Re-adjust valves Re-torque as above in 500 miles
